Club Awards

JIM WENTWORTH MOST VALUABLE PLAYER AWARDS

The Jim Wentworth Most Valuable Player Awards were established in 2000 in recognition of long-time club member, Jim Wentworth, who tragically died in early 2000 while still serving as club president. Jim had two sons who played in the club from Squirt to Midget levels. Over many years, Jim and his wife Rachel were volunteers and supporters of the club. The hocky club awarded MVP trophies for the first time for the 1999-2000 season. These trophies were renamed in honor of Jim Wentworth for the 2000-2001 season. These awards are presented each year to the travel team players who have been judged by their coaches to be the most valuable or valuable players on the team.

Winners are selected from each travel team at the end of every season. Winners receive a trophy engraved with the Jim Wentworth Most Valuable Player Award designation.

JOSH FUCHS MOST INSPIRATIONAL PLAYER AWARD

The Josh Fuchs Most Inspirational Player Award was first established and awarded by the Santa Rosa Junior Hockey Club for the 1995-96 season. The award was funded by SRJHC in memory of Josh Fuchs. Josh played for SRJHC for a relatively short time, from 1991 to 1995. But he made a big impression on those with whom he skated. He was twice selected to go to the elite California Select Sixteen during his time in Santa Rosa.

This award is for the player who wears his heart on his sleeve, the sleeve of his hockey sweater! It is for the skater who exudes his love of hockey; for the skater who will not commit a penalty beause he does not want to get off the ice; for the skater who rolls up socks and wraps them in duct tape so he can play knee hockey in the hallway of the house; for the skater who shoots tennis balls at the garage door to practice his shot until his family goes crazy; for the skater who works his hardest to keep his grades up so he can continue to play hockey; for the skater who happily gets up at 4:30 a.m. to make practice at 5:30 a.m., or who sleeps after school (even if he is sixteen) so he can make a late-night practice and still be properly rested for school the next day. The Josh Fuchs Most Inspirational Player Award is for the player who will skate on whatever team he can get on, just so he can play. It is for the player who encourages his teammates to keep trying, no matter how dire the circumstances. It is for the player who suffers in loss, but never gives up. It is for the player who looks for his weaknesses and always tries to improve. Winners of the Josh Fuchs Most Inspirational Player Award do not have to be the best, but they have to try their best.

Josh started playing hockey two months after he turned four and played until he was killed in an automobile accident in Alaska, while on his way home from a morning hockey practice. Josh never stopped loving hockey from the moment he first stepped onto the ice. This award is for the skater who follows in Josh's footsteps.

The Murray Short Award was established and awarded by the Santa Rosa Flyers Junior Hockey Club for the 1993-94 season. The award is given to the player who is judged by all of the club's coaches to best demonstrate sportsmanship in his or her approach to hockey. The award is funded by the family of Murray Shortt in memory of his contributions to junior hockey and to the youth of Sonoma County. Murray Shortt--"Mr. Hockey," as he was known--was a highly successful coach of youth hockey for more than thirty-five years in California and Michigan. Since the beginning of hockey in Santa Rosa, Murray worked with young hockey players as coach and president of SRJHC. In addition, Murray ran the Snoopy Hockey School with NHL instructors, and for eighteen years was the tournament marshall for the world famous Snoopy's Senior World Hockey Tournament.

WIEGAND MOST IMPROVED PLAYER AWARD

The Wiegand Trophy was first established and awarded by the Santa Rosa Junior Hockey Club for the 1970-71 season. Today it is the oldest trophy awarded by the club. This trophy is given to the player who is judged by coaches to be the most improved hockey player for the season. The trophy was funded by Ellis and Pat Wiegand as a way to recognize those players who made the most improvement in their skills over the course of a single season. Ellis Wiegand was a long-time referee, who worked his first Flyer game in 1969. The trophy is a tribute to Ellis and recognition of his devotion and contribution to youth hockey in Santa Rosa.

Brandon Grossi Award

BRANDON GROSSI'S STORY

Brandon Grossi had an extraordinary love for the game of hockey. Brandon would spend as much time as possible ice skating.  And when he was unable to ice skate, he would be roller blading.  Also it didn’t matter if he was in skates or shoes, you would almost always find him with a hockey stick in his hand.

As a player in the House program, his enthusiasm and energy was always a positive example to his teammates. He would push himself to compete hard which inspired other players to do likewise. He was always pushing himself to be best hockey player he could be.

When he was a young teenager, Brandon was diagnosed with bone cancer and was faced with the reality of losing the lower portion of his leg. Brandon did not see this as an end to his love of this sport. He saw it as an interruption.

After his surgery, he began his therapy and rehab. Determined not to let cancer keep him away from playing the sport he loved, Brandon started saving for a special prosthetic that would allow him to skate again. The Santa Rosa Junior Hockey Club supported his effort by holding several fund raiser events for him.  Unfortunately after spending many months of therapy, the cancer returned. Brandon eventually lost his battle with cancer due to complications from the disease.

Every season, in honor of the memory of Brandon, the House Program recognizes one special player who exhibits a love for the sport of hockey and demonstrates that willingness to overcome all obstacles to continue playing this wonderful game.
